Sneak Peek at The Shameful Tiki Room, Opening in Toronto on November 19
Toronto’s new tiki bar, The Shameful Tiki Room, is now slated to open on November 19. There will be a three-day celebration, with live music, rum tastings, and other special happenings. As reported last August on Critiki News, this is a sister location to the very well received Vancouver, B.C. location of The Shameful Tiki Room (it has an Overall Critiki rating of 9.2.). Owner Rod Moore has shared some sneak peek shots of the in-progress buildout with Critiki News, and some details about what to expect from this space:
As with Vancouver, trying to achieve a sense of authenticity but even more, a sense of Disney like fun. A touch of mystery, a touch of “over the topness” and a bit of visual over stimulation. Classic tiki music (Exotica mixed with surf, lounge, etc.), pupu platters like crab rangoon and of course a 40-odd drink cocktail menu comprised of mostly classics made to exact original recipe standards. All cocktails, as with Vancouver, served in correct glassware with correct garnish. No exceptions.
The room has a capacity of 70, and will have three different areas: the front, the bar, and the back room. The back room contains “Christian’s Hut,” a tribute to a historic Southern California tiki bar. The original Christian’s Hut began in 1935 as a bar for the cast and crew on the set of “Mutiny On the Bounty” on Catalina Island. Clark Gable starred as Fletcher Christian, and the bar was situated just under his room. When filming was completed, it opened as a real bar in Newport Beach. Christian’s Hut burned down in 1963, but its oddball mascot “The Goof” can still be seen today atop the Bali Hai in San Diego. Back to The Shameful Tiki Room: the hut will be raised a bit and shrouded in foliage and bamboo, separating it from the rest of the room, a sort of semi-private space for a group.
The Shameful Tiki Room will be located at 1378 Queen St West, in the Parkdale neighborhood of Toronto. Watch its Facebook page for more details about the Grand Opening celebration. A Critiki listing will be created once it has opened on November 19. [Update: the listing has now been created, you can find it here.]
